Sarah Hirst and Douglas Holstock play a well-picked selection of songs
from the classic standard vocal repertoire that is drawn from some of the 20th century’s best melodic moments. Some lovely, some brittle and some “you just have to hear” songs cover the best 30 years of popular and show tune writing from that time; 30’s 40’s and 50’s.
Sarah and Douglas balance these great tunes with a spare selection of beautiful originals by Sarah and a few thoughtfully chosen covers by some of our great artists from this era, such as Sinead O’Connor, Morrissey and Tom Waits.
Sarah has been performing and teaching for years and her readings of these tunes are timeless because she respects and understands the composer’s intent. There are singers around with more flash but very few with such commitment to the melody.
Douglas plays guitar a little like a piano player. He will mix chord passages, walking bass lines and single note reference to the melody more or less simultaneously while taking great care to support Sarah’s vocal line and to never intrude on the moment.
Sarah and Douglas will add a sophisticated, intimate and atmospheric touch to your occasion.
